The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing was created in 1995. It operates within the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Mathematics, which from its inception has been a strong supporter of school mathematics activities.

The CEMC sponsors the Canadian Mathematics Competitions that are written annually by approximately 90 000 students across Canada.  These competitions are intended to challenge the top Mathematics students in the country.  The highest mark on the CEMC competitions within each individual school is awarded a medal, and any other students scoring in the top 25% of all participants nationally receive certificates of distinction.  The results of the top achieving students at Miramichi Valley High School can be viewed by selecting a particular year from the chart below.
